Hanoi Botanical Gardens - 09/02/2012

Hm...hm I think that my Besra was in fact a Crested Goshawk immature. Look at this slight crest. I am a bit surprised, I didn't found this guy particularly large.
Not easy at all those Accipiters...

  1. Really atmospheric photos Sebastian! It almost makes me cold just looking at them!

And yes, as you say, certainly a Crested Goshawk - Accipiters are really hard. I thought something looked wrong for Besra on the last set of photos but I didn't feel confident enough to comment. Now it all makes sense, and having this species in the Botanical Gardens is much more likely than having a Besra there. All the same, an excellent Hanoi bird!

  2. Hi Simon,

Yep, it was a classic beautiful Hanoi winter day. It was even a little bit foggy... at noon.
This guy is the happiest Goshawk of Vietnam : fruit trees on the right - full of Bulbuls, and seed plate for pigeons on the left - full of sparrows and... rats.
Not yet spotted attacks on pigeons - too big maybe.

  3. Today at lunch time, our raptor went straight at the pigeon mob twice, startling them, but it never seemed to single one out for a meal. Exciting stuff to watch though. Maybe building up courage for a bigger meal???
