Tuyên Quang Province / 9th-11th Feb

Hi all,

Spent the Vietnamese Têt New Year in Tuyên Quang province (150 km north from Hanoi), more precisly in Hàm Yên district. This gave me a couple of hours birding in the local rice paddies, belts of bamboo along streams and plantations of Keo tai tượng (Acacia mangium) on hills - called "rừng" (=forest) by local people.. hm, hm... Not really the kind of place particularly promising!

The species I connected with were pretty unsurprising but a welcome change from my regular city patch species with flocks of Black Bulbuls and Large Woodshrikes, Red-billed Blue Magpies (indicators of low hunting pressure), Puff-throated and Striped Tit Babblers, Crimson Sunbirds feeding in the gardens, Yellow-bellied Warbler, Asian Barret Owlets calling around the farms, White-throated Kingfisher, Red Junglefowl singing in the "forest", Grey Bushchat...
Enough to keep me busy and happy!

Puff-throated Babbler (Chuối tiêu ngực đốm) singing in a dense bamboo ticket

male Grey Bushchat (Sẻ bụi xám)

Black-crested Bulbul (Chào mào vàng mào đen)

male Crimson Sunbird (Hút mật đỏ) feeding on a banana blossom

Welcome to the Year of the Snake!

Sebastien
