Kentish Plover rescued at Đáy river mouth

Hi all,

Last Sunday, I accompanied Mr. Trải and Mr. Trường of Birdlife to a coastal commune at the very south of Nam Dinh province, where we took a boat to Cồn Thông, a sea dune at the mouth of the River Đáy. In the cold and rain, the first creature we met was this poor little guy hung on a blind net which is about 100-meter long.

I was only given a minute to take the above photo before Mr. Truong started to gently remove the bird from the net. He must have been trying very hard to escape. This much of nilon threat was tangled on his left wing.

At last, the handsome guy (or a lady, I don't know) was strembling but safe. He stayed on Truong's hands for only a minute or two, then jump out and ran and flew away.

2 Black Storks at Hanoi / 29-10-2011

Hi all,

Big surprise this morning at the feet of Vinh Tuy Bridge with 2 Black Storks
feeding in the grasslands along the Red River (on the right in the photo above). At least one bird was an immature. I saw the second one only in fly, at great distance.
I spotted also many waders, at least 80-90 birds (and I scaned only half the place !), with 30-40 Temminck's Stints, 20+ Kentish Plovers, 2-3 Common Greenshanks (+ few Common and Green Sandpipers, many Little Ring Plovers). Probably the best spot for waders at Hanoi. But you have to bring your scope.

Vĩnh Tuy bridge mudflats - Hanoi

Hi all,

The 24th March, I visited the mudflats located at the foot of Vĩnh Tuy bridge (I have marked the location of this area on this GoogleMap).
Spotted 25-30 Kentish Plovers (many are now attaining fine breeding attire) and 2 Temminck's Stints.

I think this place which offer several hundred of meters of QUIET mudflats, very suitable for waders, is worth checking regularly.

Cheers,
Sebastien

Red river/Hanoi - 18-3-2011

I took advantage of "better" weather for a short walk along the Red River.

All the usual suspects were seen, the more notable birds spotted included 1 Long-billed Plover, 1 Kentish Plover, 3 Temminck's Stints, 20-30 Barn Swallows.

Also at least 3 nesting pairs of Little Ringed Plover (using the "broken wing" feint), 1 chick seen. Watch your steps !

Long-billed Plover. As you can see, the plumage show a significant change (compare with this picture here, taken 2 months ago) : now complete dark breast-band, dark forecrown-band, thin yellowish eyering.

with a Little Ringed Plover

Kentish Plover in Hanoi

I did my new spot along the Red river again yesterday.

No sign of the Long-billed Plover, Temminck's Stints still hanging around and a new guy : a Kentish Plover (quite rare/uncommon visitor inland ?). Some sepia pics bellow... Sun, please come back and spend few days with us. We really miss you !
